I used this with Year 2 and 3 pupils but could also be useful with LA Y4/5/6.
KS2 English/Drama 36 slide power-point lesson about the Willow Pattern story which includes pupil resources and a lesson plan (slides 29-36). This lesson can be used as a follow up to Lesson 1 (also for sale!) or as a discrete lesson. The lesson start focuses on the poem, vocabulary and meaning of the story linked to corresponding images. The main body of the lesson concentrates on developing key words to describe characters, learning and practising Chinese rituals and greetings for use in the small group drama activity and using drama freeze frames or frozen pictures to depict scenes from the story. There is opportunity for the groups to develop dialogue and use the rituals in their own role play scenarios. At the end of the lesson pupils are encouraged to perform their role play scenario and receive feedback against specific criteria.

KS2 Battle of Hastings Diary example.
Set in October 1066, a Norman Knight writes about his observations before, during and after the Battle of Hastings. This example demonstrates features of a diary and acts as a recount of the event including personal feelings and points of view.
Useful in the lesson for pupils to use to identify features and structure of diary writing or as a Recount Checklist activity.
Can be used in cross curricular History topic on Norman life, Castles or Knights.
Handbook of codes for pupils to crack either individually or with a partner. Each page has messages for pupils to decode from one of six codes including Reverse Alphabet, Letter/Number substitution, Secret Symbol Code, Morse, Cipher Wheel and Pigpen Cipher. There is a practise page for pupils to devise their own secret messages and a template and instructions for making a Cipher Wheel. There is a page where pupils can use three methods to create their own secret agent code name.
The Reverse Alphabet, Letter/Number and Secret Symbol codes are suitable for LA/MA pupils whilst the others are more challenging. Great fun as part of a lesson (English Grammar, comprehension etc) or as a filler activity for a specific group.

The slides include group and paired questions to explore and define the life of a highwayman, their target victims and the reasons for particular types of robbery. There is a focus on the life of Dick Turpin who has written a Facebook page and a historical account of his crimes leading to his arrest. Includes an opportunity to learn the game ‘Hangman’ and look at historical documents eg Christening record, Trial poster . Final task is the design of a ‘Wanted ’poster for the King.

Pupils discuss the merits of each item in a set and rank them from most to least important by sticking them on the blank template. Can be used to develop understanding and promote awareness in the sun through cross curricular topics such as ‘Summer’, ‘Seaside’, ‘Outdoors’ and PSHE. Works well as a pre sports day or outdoor visit activity.

The slides are easy to follow and devised to encourage partner/trio discussion and collaboration through key questioning and small group activities. Slides 2-4 use pupil knowledge as a starting point assessment through a reflection activity. Slides 5-11 focus on William the Conqueror and include a paired map activity using atlases. A scaffold of a poem which can be adapted by theme to support cross curricular writing or to develop a specific aspect of English such as alliteration, similes. The lesson is created around the story of the Willow Pattern and the image of the plate to generate ideas and collaborative discussion. There are opportunities for pupils to read the poem, extend vocabulary, discuss the characters and watch a short clip of the story on Youtube before creating their own five box storyboard linked to their own collected vocabulary from the lesson.

Florence Nightingale's Facebook page can be used as a reference for information gathering for work on biographies, non fiction writing, comprehension, discussion work and as a template for writing a Facebook page about a non fiction famous character or person. Can be used with KS1 and KS2.
History Detectives -The Mystery of the lost property/Petra the Rose City : Two complete power-point History lessons for pupils in KS1. Lesson one begins with a role play scenario asking pupils to solve a lost property mystery. The learning includes developing historical investigation skills: gathering information from photographic source material, developing historical vocabulary, asking questions and analysing and drawing conclusions to build a character profile. Lesson two builds upon the skills used in the previous lesson using the archaeological world heritage site, the ‘Rose City’ of Petra as a stimulus. Learning focuses on developing understanding of facts, guesses and questions. Included is a simple Petra information sheet which can be printed for pupil use in the lesson.
